Sheridan Faculty of Business students compete in The Business Interview sponsored by Career Services

April 5, 2013

BIC participantsSix students from the Faculty of Business recently participated in the inaugural Business Interview Competition held in the Residence Conference Centre at the Davis campus. The Sheridan Career Centre sponsored competition required students to participate in a preliminary event where they filed an application, a resume review, attended a career workshop and participated in a video interview submission. These submissions were then reviewed by Employment Consultants in the Career Centre and the students received feedback on how to prepare for the April 3 event.

The Sheridan Career Centre promoted the event as a way to help students gain valuable interview skills and learn how to use Optimal Resume (an on-line resource for Sheridan students), to boost a student’s career capital and provide an opportunity to meet with employers and receive immediate feedback.

The competition was set-up in a speed networking format, allowing students the opportunity to meet with all six judges from Winners, Staples, Wrigley’s, TekSystems and Technical Standards and Safety Authority TSSA. Prizes were awarded to the overall winners in first and second place. Nicole Whitewood, 3rd year Business Marketing student was this year’s 1st place winner and received a $250.00 gift certificate from Winners. Second place went to Jason Dunphy, a 3rd year Business Marketing student who received a $140 gift certificate from Staples. Each student received Sheridan professional portfolios to assist with their overall interview impression.

The feedback from the participants was unanimous – all of the students felt this was a fantastic event and gained valuable feedback to assist with their future job search strategies.

“The Business Interview Competition was a great opportunity for me to perfect the skills I’ll need after I graduate at the end of this month. I had the chance to network with 6 recruiters in a speed-networking style which allowed me to speak one-on-one with potential employers, without the pressures of an actual interview. The employers also provided feedback on what they’re looking at when they hire,” said Nicole Whitewood, first place winner.

Faculty of Business Professor Ginger Grant speaks about Business Innovation Through Storytelling

Professor Ginger Grant speaks about Business Innovation through Storytelling

Professor Ginger Grant speaks about Business Innovation through Storytelling

Faculty of Business Professor Ginger Grant recently hosted a presentation on the impact of storytelling on business transformation at the Sheridan Applied Research Collaboration Centre, Trafalgar campus.

Storytelling is a tool increasingly used by business to portray complex issues in an engaging and comprehensive manner.  Professor Grant says that the ethical complexities involved in conducting business in a global environment require a multicultural approach to business problems.  Stories also provide the context where students can hone their moral imagination bringing a balance between critical and analytical thinking.

GGbProfessor Grant says the purpose of story has always been to act as a bridge between the past and the future: It is the stories of old that carry the cultural value system into the present and on into the future, re-contextualized to suit the time at hand. Why is this important now? Our mode of production has shifted to organizational knowledge creation and knowledge workers. In this new economic environment, a traditional mode of production thinking is potentially counter-productive if not destructive. A new paradigm is needed, one that recognizes that the future belongs to people who use their hearts as well as their heads. Awareness of this shift is the key to realizing a new paradigm that links passion to purpose with an economic driver.

This presentation is a sneak peek of Dr. Grant’s upcoming lecture at the Global Innovators Conference 2013 in Doha, Quatar, on April 4-7th.

Mahfuz Chowdury, Sheridan Business graduate

Mahfuz Chowdury, Sheridan Business graduate

Sheridan Faculty of Business student, Mahfuz Chowdry, is awarded the Canadian Association for Co-operative Education Award for Co-op Student of the Year.

Mahfuz completed his final Faculty of Business work term with Candybox Marketing in the Summer of 2012.  Chowdury recognized the revolution happening within social media and saw it could be leveraged for business purposes. He sought a connection with Darrell Keezer, President of Candybox, and connected with him through LinkedIn. From there, he convinced Keezer to hire him for a social media marketing co-op position. At Candybox, his primary responsibility was to educate prospective clients seeking to integrate social media strategies as a part of their marketing plans. Chowdury applied his essential business-to-business sales techniques, marketing plan writing, and presentation skills to create and deliver workshops from his Sheridan marketing courses and started generating lucrative contracts for Candybox.

During his time at Candybox, he managed to double attendance in their Social Media workshops, acquired more than 1000 followers for the company’s Twitter and Facebook accounts, and created a buzz to achieve the highest number of sales for one of their biggest clients, Walk at Home. His work term evaluation was stellar and he was praised for his significant contributions to Candybox.

Born in Saudi Arabia, Chowdury moved to Mississauga with his parents who sought educational excellence for their son. He embraced college life at Sheridan through his involvement in academics, student organizations such as Enactus and as a Student Admission Representative. Not afraid of a challenge, Mahfuz is a stellar student who believes in positive self-growth and promotes his message through his own organization ‘Project Reinvention’ which has extended throughout Canada and internationally.

Mahfuz’s energy, enthusiasm and love of marketing is infectious. His smiling faces graces billboards, buses, websites and promotional material for Sheridan College as he represents Sheridan’s ideals of co-operative education and the integration of work and school. Chowdury has learned as much from the marketing co-op program as the marketing co-op program has learned from him.

As the voice for co-operative education in Canada, CAFCE assesses students’ achievements in job performance, academic performance and responsibility. They select one College and one University student throughout Canada in recognition of the students’ contributions to their employer, co-operative education and the community.

The learning experiences and memories made during Vanier will last a lifetime,” said Erin McManus.

“The most exciting part for me was getting to actually apply our education in a competitive nature and comparing other school’s work to ours, which is something you miss out on with OCMC because of the closed presentations. We bonded strongly as a team, this was an experience I’ll never forget,” said Lindsay Cannon.

The Vanier Case Challenge 2013 offers tough competition among the student teams from all of the competing schools. Sheridan’s Spread the Net Student Challenge to purchase mosquito netting for African children

February 11, 2013

STN_Penny_DriveStudents from Sheridan’s Faculty of Business Tourism & Travel, join Early Childhood Education and Print Journalism students for The Spread the Net Student Challenge, a fundraiser and awareness campaign about the impact that Malaria has on a significant portion of the world’s population and the leading cause of death in Africa.

Every 60 seconds a child dies from Malaria.  An easy, effective, long-lasting, and affordable solution is the use of bed nets which have been proven to reduce the incidence of Malaria by at least 50%.

Students will be staffing a table in Sheridan’s “B” Wing at Trafalgar Campus this Tuesday and Wednesday to collect funds and provide information. With the retirement of the Canadian penny, we will be happy to accept them from donors and do the coin rolling. In exchange for a donation of any amount (including pennies) donors are offered a paper to write the name of a loved one and place it in the displayed bed net.

“The team from Sheridan College is competing against 15 other colleges and universities across Canada. The winning school will be featured on an episode of the CBC’s Rick Mercer Report in April, 2013,” said Roger Halfacre, Professor, Sheridan Faculty of Business.
