October 3, 2010

Scott Stratten - Social Media Expert

Tweeting to his more than 63000 (and rising) followers every step of the way, Sheridan School of Business professor Scott Stratten is off on a hectic ten week 30 city tour across North America to promote his new book released by Wiley Publishing UnMarketing: Stop Marketing and Start Engaging.

And Stratten just can’t stop proving that social media attracts hordes of followers to the audience. He pre-sold hundreds of copies of his new book when he announced his tour by asking his followers to find sponsors in each city to guarantee an initial sale of 100 books and to pay his expenses.  After announcing the first ten cities, his audience rallied and the tour was guaranteed – social media in action. Stratten says that he now needs to write a book about putting his book tour together through Twitter- just to reinforce his maxims about engaging the audience through social media.

To find Scott Stratten on Twitter just click his link at Unmarketing.

Stratten has been named by the global PR company Edelman as the 19th most influential twitterer by engagement.

Sheridan School of Business Marketing, E-commerce and Human Resources students recently designed and delivered workshops geared to small businesses with the promotion and support of the Brampton Small Business Enterprise Centre.

Sheridan second and third year School of Business students from the Davis campus, to date, have designed and delivered eight workshops for Small Business and entrepreneurs at the Enterprise Center in downtown Brampton. The workshops are an initiative of the Sheridan School of Business Council, developed with the support of Sheridan Business professors, and are offered in conjunction with the Brampton Small Business Enterprise Centre which is operated by the City of Brampton with Government of Ontario funding.

The workshops have included presentation, interactive and coaching components. Students covered topics from Self Motivation and Leadership to Negotiation and Positive Influence. This year two Human Resources students, Oshin Chhabra and Lisa Bissoondhari were able to develop the negotiating skills part of our people Engagement theme by providing a practical step by step approach and a hands on activity for each small business owner to apply and practice with.

Both Marketing and E-commerce students have worked together to deliver four “Relationship Marketing and E-commerce” workshops to small business men and women. Students covered topics from Sales and Networking to Customer Retention and Web Design. Two of the Marketing students, Armando Toossi and Bhavandeep Aulakh helped small business owners develop strategies for customer retention and for building increased customer loyalty. Similar to the HR workshops, these workshops included presentation, interactive and coaching components.

“These workshops have provided local small businesses with very useful business skills and inspiration from the energetic delivery. The Enterprise Centre appreciates the partnership we have with Sheridan students and faculty over the years,” said Cassandra Baccardax of the Brampton Small Business Enterprise Center.

Office Administration students get first hand advice from Sheridan College deans and administrators

May 5, 2009

Office Administration students during their Administrative Simulations field trip.

“Trustworthiness. Approachability. Professionalism. Poise. Flexibility.  Superior communication skills.”

These were the themes emphasized by Sheridan Deans and Executive Assistants in answer to questions posed by graduating Office Administration Executive students. The group visited the Sheridan College Oakville campus recently giving them the opportunity to ask questions of an expert panel about their career opportunities.

The Sheridan School of Business students interviewed a group of deans and administrative professionals from around the college who offered to share some tips on working conditions expected of the Office Administration graduates when they start their careers.

The panel included Gerard Mercer, Dean of the School of Business; Michael Collins, Dean of the School of Animation, Arts and Design; Elisabeth Connell, Executive Assistant  to the Vice President, Finance and Administration; Donna Barton, Executive Assistant to the Vice President, Student Services and Information Technology, Laura Christopherson, Operations Manager for the School of Community and Liberal Studies; Lisa Todd, Executive Assistant to the Dean of the School of Animation, Arts and Design; and Stella Coleman, Executive Assistant to the Dean of the School of Business.

Students presented a comprehensive list of questions to the panel about real world working conditions in an administrative capacity. The Executive Assistants agreed that their jobs were really about dealing with people, and that the technical aptitude was important yet secondary to people skills.  The Sheridan Office Administration students were reminded they would need to work well with others, be approachable, and have a healthy sense of humour during stressful times.

A similar message about ‘soft’ skills was reinforced by the panel of Sheridan Deans.  In response to the question: “What qualities do you think a person absolutely has to have in order to be successful in this position?” – the answer was – trustworthiness.  The Deans agreed that their Executive Assistant must be implicitly trusted.

The Deans also stressed that their executive assistant needs to be professional and poised, one who others must see as someone they both respect and can count on.

Last was the need for superior communication skills, along with a perceived approachability.  Deans Mercer and Collins agreed that Executive Assistants, were extensions of themselves into the college community and beyond, and needed to be well perceived by others, and able to communicate well with students, staff, other executives, as well as with the community.

The panel and visits were arranged by Leasa Steadman, Professor in the Office Administration group of programs as part of the Administrative Simulations course offered to the students in their final semester at Sheridan College.

“As the oldest student attending, I want to remark about how relevant the forum was for students of all ages. In particular, the elevator pitch was the most significant idea of the day for me.
