September 16, 2011

Research assistants Sarrazin and Voelk work on the Aging in Place project for SERC

Sheridan Faculty of Business students Alexi Voelk and Andrew Sarrazin, spent the summer as research assistants working with Pat Spadafora, Director, Sheridan Elder Research Centre (SERC) on a NSERC grant called Aging in Place: Optimizing Health Outcomes through Technology, Design and Social Inclusion.  The proposal question:  How can Sheridan and the Sheridan Elder Research Centre (SERC) best collaborate with, prepare and support small and medium-sized businesses to respond to the significant market opportunities presented by this demographic phenomenon?

“This research is important to SERC because one of our mandates is to encourage small to medium size businesses to recognize the demographic shift and to support them in learning more about working with, marketing to and designing for mature consumers,” said Spadafora.

Business and Industry Knowledge Exchange Network participants discuss issue around an aging demographic.

Students Voelk and Sarrazin were hired to work on business aspects of the grant. Voelk worked with pigeon* branding + design, conducting background research on marketing to mature consumers and designing products for mature consumers. Sarrazin’s focus was the business of aging and he assisted in the launch of  the Business and Industry Knowledge Exchange Network (BIKEN). The intent of the group is to help small and medium size businesses to diversity and to grow their businesses in response to an aging demographic.

“The Aging in Place research will also provide valuable opportunities for Sheridan students in capstone project courses to create and administer their own practical research project using SERC’s current research facilities. Interested students should be encouraged to contact SERC for more information,” said Spadafora

The BIKEN team organized two breakfast meetings with the goal of bringing businesses together to recognize this demographic shift and to support them in learning more about mature consumers.

Faculty of Business Professor Kathleen Begin recently completed the Elder Planning Counselor (EPC) designation and was interested to know how Sheridan College and the business world was responding to the aging population and the ensuing challenges and opportunities.

“I think we have a responsibility to our students to prepare them for what they will experience in their careers and personal lives. We can do this by building examples and cases in our classes that reflect different demographic groups,” said Begin.

Alexi and Andrew were part of a cohort of 13 research assistants recruited from Faculty of Business, Faculty of Applied Science and Technology, Faculty of Arts, Animation, and Design and Faculty of Applied Health and Community Service.   In addition, Faculty of Business Professor Cathryn Oliver, was hired to support Advertising students Voelk and Sarrazin, both of whom are continuing as part-time researchers into the fall semester.

I think its great that we were able to show the students some of the creative past grads have worked on.  Its one thing to hear about what we do, it’s a completely different experience to view a commercial currently on air and know that a Sheridan grad was a part of it. Its because of opportunities like this that makes the Sheridan Advertising program the best,” said Sarah Thornely, Account Executive, DDBCanada.

Sheridan Graduate Advertising Management program hosts networking event for current students

March 14, 2011

Graduates of Sheridan's graduate program in Advertising Management return to network with program students.

Members of Sheridan’s graduate certificate program Advertising Management recently held their networking event with graduates of their program to meet, greet and network. More than a dozen recent graduates shared their job search and employment experiences with members currently in the program.

Advertising Management students network at the recent event.

Current students in the program commented about how beneficial this type of event is to provide opportunities for them to ask questions of the recent graduates about the transitions from being a student in the program to actually working in the advertising industry.  Most of the Advertising Management students already possess degrees in another field of study and are attending Sheridan’s  one-year graduate certificate program to refine their opportunities of getting work in the advertising industry.

“It was great getting to talk to people who were in our situation only a few years ago. It certainly reassured me that advertising is the right industry for me. Everyone there was really friendly and helpful and I could easily say it has been the most helpful networking experience I have had thus far,” said Timothy Simpson, Advertising Management student.

Graduates of the program, representing many different advertising agencies, were scattered about the room to allow students to interact with them and ask questions about securing and managing a satisfying career in advertising.

“The annual graduate networking event allows for current students to get a glimpse into the experiences, successes and obstacles that come with entering the advertising industry. It is a great atmosphere where students can relax and relate to us on a different level from their teachers because as graduates we were in the same position a few years ago. It is such an amazing night, filled with positivity and support for these students who are filled with uncertainty, excitement and genuine interest. As a graduate, you feel as though you are contributing to the program that has allowed you to fulfil your career goals. As long as Peggy Barnwell, program coordinator, asks me to come back, I will be there every year,” said Alana Roach, Marketing Communications Specialist, Bell Canada.

Advertising Management students network a recent event

Graduates of the program at the networking event included: Cristian Tesoro, Senior Associate, Mindshare, James Clark, Project Manager, Indusblue Inc., Jose Camarena, Account Manager, Torstar Digital, Judie Rodrigues, Strategist, OMD, Katie Manor, Digital Strategist, OMD, Laura Sarginson, Account Director, JAM Direct, Lara Ruggeri, Jr. Marketing Coordinator, Tayco, Lexy Khoo, Associate – Planning, Excelerator, Mario Lio Account Coordinator, Shaw Media, Megan Metzak, Associate Planner, Mindshare, Raquel Malaga, Media Coordinator, Wunderman, Alana Roach, Marketing Communications Specialist, Bell Canada, Todd Bennie, Account Executive, InField Marketing Group.

“It was a great event put on by the faculty this year (as it was last year too!). It’s always a great opportunity to meet with the upcoming grads as I found it to be a huge help when I was still in school. It’s great to see such passion by the students and professionalism as some even followed up the next day thanking me for my time. The informal atmosphere really made talking to the students much more personal as we were all able to not just share advice, but stories about actually being involved in the industry. It’s always a great honor being asked to come back and I look forward to it,” said Cristian Tesoro, Senior Associate, Mindshare.

In addition the classrooms would feature several overhead data projectors which will allow for multiple projections to various areas of the classroom.  The new projectors will be hung at a higher angle to allow the professor to literally stand in front of the screen without blocking the image.
