Author, Eva Stachniak launched her third novel The Winter Palace to critical acclaim as her story of Catherine The Great is securely set at Number 3 and sure to rise on The Globe and Mail bestsellers list.
Stachniak’s The Winter Palace is a story of power and vulnerability in the court of Empress Elizabeth of Russia at the Winter Palace in St. Petersburg. John Barber in The Globe and Mail, praised the award-winning Stachniak for her well researched story…
“With The Winter Palace, her deep personal interest in the history of Eastern Europe has magically coincided with a worldwide surge of interest in her subject, Russian empress Catherine the Great.”
Pulitzer prize winning author Jane Smiley reviewed The Winter Palace and said

The Winter Palace, Eva Stachniak, 464 pages, Doubleday Canada
“…The Winter Palace is filled with a sense of disorienting vastness punctuated by particular rules and charms that people use to give themselves a feeling of control.”
Stachniak, formerly a Professor in the Faculty of Business at Sheridan College, had her first artistic success with her debut novel Necessary Lies which won the Amazon.com award for best new novel in 2000.
“I remember well that I started writing fiction when I was a full time instructor at Sheridan College. My colleagues were, in fact, my first readers, and their encouragement meant and still means a lot to me,” said Stachniak.
Stachniak’s novels Necessary Lies and her second novel Garden of Venus have successfully sold world-wide and have been translated into several languages.
Stachniak’s new novel The Winter Palace has had foreign release and is already selling well in the United States, U.K. and Europe and is currently being translated into Polish, Dutch and German for the foreign markets.
“I am delighted that The Winter Palace has met with such overwhelming interest and support. I like to think that every novel I finish is better than the previous one, but in the end all a writer can do is tell a story. The rest depends on readers,” said Stachniak.

Simone Birthwright, Mahfuz Chowdhury, Angela Wigfield, Sylvia You, Alisha Dennis, Arianne Martin
When Sheridan Student Services group were looking for someone to give a motivational talk to their Student Admissions Representative (STARs) the first person who came to mind was Mahfuz Chowdury.
Chowdury, a second year Faculty of Business Marketing student located at the Trafalgar Campus in Oakville, has taken his life experiences and his entrepreneurial spirit to re-invent himself as a motivational speaker. Chowdury shares his story in his seminars on how personal development has opened doors for him. He stresses the importance of always keeping a positive attitude. Chowdhury’s message to his audience is simple – always keep a positive attitude.
“It is easy to have a positive attitude when everything is going right, but a champion has a positive attitude when everything is going wrong,” said Chowdhury.
Chowdhury’s venture is called Project Reinvention and his goal is to help students reinvent themselves through personal development which he defines as any activity that helps a person become self-aware and therefore help improve themself.
Alisha Denis, On-Campus Recruitment Officer for Trafalgar Campus explains the effect that Mahfuz had on the Sheridan STARs. “It’s never easy to get into the minds of a particular audience to influence them, but Mahfuz’s energy and words not only got into their minds but also their hearts. Our students left energized, informed, motivated, excited, and empowered. You can’t ask for more from a motivational speaker. I look forward to following Mahfuz’s career and discovering how I may use his talents next,” said Denis.
Chowdhury has spoken to student groups several times for Sheridan Student Services.
Mahfuz Chowdhury is also a member of the Sheridan Business program’s Ontario Colleges’ Marketing Competition team and will compete in the Marketing Case Event with team partner Marc Brajak at the coming OCMC event, hosted this year by Humber College November 24-25.

Graeme O'Neil interviews Extreme Athlete, Trevor Bodogh during Canada's Got Talent auditions in Toronto.
Extreme Athlete, and Sheridan Faculty of Business graduate Trevor Bodogh says he has a hard time saying no to a good opportunity to create exposure for his Bike Trials sport, and the recent Toronto auditions for television series Canada’s Got Talent was the right move at the right time.
Bodogh hopes that his Canada’s Got Talent audition will help give a little jet fuel to the hard work he has invested into pursuing his extreme athlete career in terms of exposure, inspiration and interest from sponsors and events. Bodogh’s focus at the audition was on creating a unique energy around what he wanted to demonstrate to the judges and he believes that he was a success.

Trevor Bodogh soars through his routine at CGT auditions
When Bodogh’s team arrived at the Rogers Centre for the CGT audition, the rain started to pour while he had a truck full of props to bring in past the endless lines filled with contestants. After meeting CGT host, Graeme O’Neil, he started bringing in the deconstructed metal pieces of his prop setup.
After about what felt like the 20th trip inside and many curious looks from the waiting contestants, Bodogh’s team set everything up and were put into line near the front. CGT host Graeme O’Neil returned shortly after seeing the giant metal ladder fully constructed and asked Bodogh for a demonstration, on camera. Amid screams of excitement and fear, Trevor Bodogh leaped his bike up and then soared off the end of the six-foot high ladder set-piece. Then with the help of the CGT team, he hauled all his props downstairs for the real audition in front of the executive show producer and his judges. Bodogh says that contestants will know by October 30th if they are selected for the next step in the Canada’s Got Talent process. Make sure to stay tuned to Canada’s Got Talent!
Trevor Bodogh is a graduate of Sheridan College, Faculty of Business, Business Administration – Finance program, and is an extreme athlete, an entrepreneur, and a sought after business speaker. Bodogh has appeared at Sheridan’s Virox Future Forum in 2011, 2010, and 2009.

Sheridan Faculty of Business professor, Golnaz Golnaraghi
Sheridan Faculty of Business professor Golnaz Golnaraghi, has had an abstract “Unveiling” Quebec’s Bill 94 and implications for Muslim women – A postcolonial critique, accepted for presentation to CMS 7 2011 Critical Management Studies in Naples, Italy, July 2011.
The paper is co-authored with her supervisor, Albert J. Mills, PhD, St. Mary’s University, Sobey School of Business. A heated debate ensues in the Province of Quebec, Canada, regarding the proposed Bill 94, the first legislation in North American to place a de facto ban on religious face coverings. This is a small piece of legislation with a significant impact if passed. Widespread movements of this kind to ban face coverings have serious implications creating potentially new boundaries for Muslim women.
In this paper, the authors will explore the discursive nature and implications of Western moves to ban the niqab from public engagement. They also explore the issues raised for feminist organizational analyses in the face of difficult cross-cultural engagement.
It is the first time that the bi-annual CMS Conference will be held outside of the UK. This may be interpreted as a sign of the progressive diffusion of this branch of management theory, and in particular, the interest which is also emerging in Italy. The 7th International CMS Conference aims to explore established social practices and institutional arrangements in new and often radical ways, inviting contributions from a global constituency of critical scholars, practitioners, students and other interested parties.

Lou Schizas
Sheridan Faculty of Business professor Lou Schizas invites everyone to join him for the Wednesday April 13 meeting of the Canadian Society of Technical Analysts (CSTA) held at the Trafalgar campus of Sheridan College in room J320 from 7:00 pm – 9:00 pm. Speaker Tim Reazor, Director of IDB Meetup Education, will discuss Using Investor’s Business Daily to Maximize Your Profits.
Reazor’s thesis is: In an extensive study of the greatest winning stocks over the past 125 years, the biggest winners shared seven common characteristics before they make big price moves. Identifying these seven characteristics in companies today can help you find which stocks are most likely to be the next top-performers.
The CSTA says that by attending this class you’ll discover out how to quickly identify leading stocks while learning to make better buy and sell decisions. At the end of the class you’ll walk away with a watch list of stocks and an action plan for successful investing. There will be actionable skills taught, so members will leave with practical tips they can use and apply—regardless of whether or not they subscribe to IBD.
Tim Reazor is the Director of Investor’s Business Daily’s Meetup Investor Education, the program that brings IBD investors together each month to meet, learn, and profit. He also leads the IBD Speaker Outreach Program, which sends IBD speakers throughout North America, providing introductory, intermediate, and advanced investing seminars to individual and professional investors. Tim has been successful at guiding investors and teaching them how to spot emerging growth stocks that meet IBD’s CAN SLIM criteria

Three students walked away each with a $1000 scholarship and one student won a personal mentoring session courtesy of Randy Pilon, President & CEO, Virox Technologies Inc., at the recent Virox Future Forum 2011 hosted by Sheridan College Faculty of Business. Virox Scholarship winners included Faculty of Business students Stephanie Palasti, Jennifer Peddle, and Ernest Cornet. Reba Chopra won a personal mentoring session with Randy Pilon, President & CEO of Virox Technologies Inc.
Randy Pilon is the creator and sponsor of the Virox Future Forum, the President & CEO of Virox Technologies Inc., and also a Sheridan College business graduate. Jennifer Peddle - Virox Scholarship winner
“The Virox Future Forum was insightful, informative and interesting. I am so glad I went as I definitely learned a lot. My plans for the scholarship are to use it toward university in the Fall. I am currently contemplating going to either Ryerson University or Nipissing University. I want to thank Randy Pilon again for his generosity and let him know that his money will be going to good use in furthering my education in the Human Resources field,” said Jennifer Peddle.

Stephanie Palasti - Virox Scholarship winner
Students praised the event, the speakers, and the opportunity to be part of the forum. “The event was so motivating and inspirational, such an honour to be surrounded by such incredibly successful people,” said Stephanie Palasti, Advertising program student, and winner of a Virox $1000 scholarship.

Ernest Cornet - Virox Scholarship winner

The Virox Future Forum 2011 connected top Faculty of Business students with top business speakers including Sean Wise of Wise Mentor Capital , David Foot of Boom Bust and Echo fame, and Trevor Bodogh, extreme athlete and performer and a graduate of the Sheridan College Business Administration – Finance program during the day-long event.

Reba Chopra - Virox Mentorship winner
“It’s not about who you are, it’s about what you do that defines you,” said Accounting program student Maria Sheikh. ”This perfectly reflects our three guest speakers – it’s not about who they are, it’s about what they have done and about how they are actively empowering others that defines them and sets them apart as role models for many of us,” said Sheikh.
“As I am constantly meeting new clients, Sean Wise’s presentation helped me to realize the importance of preparation before client meetings and gave me tips on how to convey my goals clearly in a short time. from David Foot, I learned the importance of demographic shifts and how trends like birth control can devastate a country’s birth rate and change their production output,” said Chris Carre, Marketing program graduate.
“ It’s not about who you are, it’s what you do that defines you” Similarly this quote perfectly reflects in reference to our three guest speakers “it’s not about they are it’s what they have done and actively empowering that defines them and sets them as a role model for many of us.

Advertising Program Coordinator, Peggy Barnwell and 19 program graduates networked with students recently.
The Sheridan Faculty of Business programs in Advertising recently held their Advertising Networking Events with eager advertising students networking with the more than 32 recent Advertising Management and Advertising program graduates in attendance. Advertising program coordinator, Peggy Barnwell and Sara Bernard, president of the Sheridan Advertising Association organized the two events in order to bring together current students with recent graduates who provided real information about career paths and career potential in the advertising industry.

Anne Sutherland, Partner, New Thinking (Sheridan Advertising 1985)
Keynote speaker of the undergraduate program networking event was Anne Sutherland, Partner, New Thinking, and Sheridan Advertising Graduate 1985 who spoke about trends in the advertising industry and strategies to capitalize on those trends.
Sarah Thornely, DDBCanada, Sheridan 2008 presented a clip of a recent samples of advertising campaigns Sheridan graduates have had a chance to work on, which included among the many presented – TD Canada Trust, Cialis, and Fallsview Casino.

Advertising students watch a clip of graduates advertising work
“The students had lots of good questions: wanting to know how I got started in the industry, what was my favourite client/campaign I had worked on, and what advice I had for them to be successful. I think its great that we were able to show the students some of the creative past grads have worked on. Its one thing to hear about what we do, it’s a completely different experience to view a commercial currently on air and know that a Sheridan grad was a part of it. Its because of opportunities like this that makes the Sheridan Advertising program the best,” said Sarah Thornely, Account Executive, DDBCanada.

Advertising students networking with graduates
“Once again I think Sheridan has gone all out for their students and put on a fantastic event! A great opportunity for students to meet with some past grads in the industry and just as excellent an opportunity for me to meet some eager, passionate and exciting students. Looking forward to working with them in the near future,” said Serene Fattouh, Account Supervisor, Draftfcb Toronto.
“Grad Night gives advertising students a great opportunity to not only network with Sheridan Advertising grads but also gives us an opportunity to find out what its really like in the industry for someone who’s just starting out. I think it’s invaluable for anyone who is about to graduate to have the chance to talk to the grads and it was a great experience,” said Jayme Bennett, Advertising student.
Also in attendance to network with students was Adam Ball, Account Coordinator, Brandworks, Eric Carvalho, Account Coordinator, Maclaren, Dan Giusti Account Executive, Blammo, Shane Holmes, Account Coordinator, Grip Limited, Amanda Patchett, Client Services Coordinator, Quarry Integrated Communications, Alethea Reston, Account Executive, Due North Communications, Lindsay Sherry, Soda And Tonic Advertising,

Demographics and Entrepreneurship were the main focus of the recent Virox Future Forum 2011 hosted by the Sheridan Faculty of Business and created and sponsored by Randy Pilon, President & CEO, Virox Technologies Inc. This year’s Virox Future Forum featured two diverse speakers - Sean Wise and David Foot who collectively brought a message of a future that will demand graduates to create their own new jobs and develop new markets that do not currently exist. All of which will require business graduates to learn new skills of corporate self-awareness and sustainability, a keen sense of demographics, to be practiced with a large dose of the daring and an entrepreneurial spirit.
