Sheridan Faculty of Business student team competes at Vanier BDC Case Challenge in Montreal

February 13, 2012

David Nowell, Mahfuz Chowdhury, Kylie Dalgleish, Kyle Todd

Three Sheridan Faculty of Business students recently had the opportunity to demonstrate their prowess in the annual Vainer College BDC Case Challenge.  Sheridan Advertising student Kylie Dalgleish, and Marketing students Mahfuz Chowdhury and Kyle Todd and Faculty coach Professor David Nowell competed against students from more than 30 colleges and CGEPs from across Canada.

The Vanier College BDC Case Challenge final results were Mohawk College 1st place, College Lionel Groulx (Montreal) 2nd place and Okanagan College (Kelowna BC) third place.

Coach David Nowell said that Sheridan team made a very strong presentation but were a bit off the mark in terms of what the judges were looking for. The Vanier Case Challenge offered very tough competition — in one division, judges took nearly two hours to pick top teams. Professor Nowell also noted that there were several colleges from out west that made a strong showing, including Okanagan College from B.C.  Students from Sheridan were among those last to present, so they spent several hours in isolation with other teams and as a result made a number of new acquaintances across the country.

Nowell noted that there was tremendous support among the student teams. The Sheridan team watched almost all of the final presentations, half of which were in French and really saw what it took to be successful. He sums it up as a fantastic learning experience for the Sheridan students and an especially valuable national event.

Kyle Todd, Kylie Dalgleish, and Mahfuz Chowdury

“It was truly an honour to participate in this event, and I couldn’t be happier to have Kyle Todd and Kylie Dalgleish as teammates. They entertained me, inspired me, and truly helped me grow as a Marketer. Along with David Nowell’s strong coaching, we were really able to bring something special into the 2012 Vanier College Case Competition,” said Mahfuz Chowdhury.

“Our Sheridan team of students were wonderful to work with and the strongest team I have ever coached in terms of presentation power. I really stood on the shoulders of my coaching colleagues there, as these students were working with me for only six weeks. It was wonderful how they came together, worked through issues together and were a joy to work with,” said Professor Nowell.

Author, Eva Stachniak launches her third new novel The Winter Palace to critical acclaim

January 23, 2012

Eva Stachniak, Author

Author, Eva Stachniak launched her third novel The Winter Palace to critical acclaim as her story of Catherine The Great is securely set at Number 3 and sure to rise on The Globe and Mail bestsellers list.

Stachniak’s The Winter Palace is a story of power and vulnerability in the court of Empress Elizabeth of Russia at the Winter Palace in St. Petersburg.  John Barber in The Globe and Mail, praised the award-winning Stachniak for her well researched story…

“With The Winter Palace, her deep personal interest in the history of Eastern Europe has magically coincided with a worldwide surge of interest in her subject, Russian empress Catherine the Great.”

Pulitzer prize winning author Jane Smiley reviewed The Winter Palace and said

The Winter Palace, Eva Stachniak, 464 pages, Doubleday Canada

“…The Winter Palace is filled with a sense of disorienting vastness punctuated by particular rules and charms that people use to give themselves a feeling of control.”

Stachniak, formerly a Professor in the Faculty of Business at Sheridan College, had her first artistic success with her debut novel Necessary Lies which won the Amazon.com award for best new novel in 2000.

“I remember well that I started writing fiction when I was a full time instructor at Sheridan College. My colleagues were, in fact, my first readers, and their encouragement meant and still means a lot to me,” said Stachniak.

Stachniak’s novels Necessary Lies and her second novel Garden of Venus have successfully sold world-wide and have been translated into several languages.

Stachniak’s new novel The Winter Palace has had foreign release and is already selling well in the United States, U.K. and Europe and is currently being translated into Polish, Dutch and German for the foreign markets.

“I am delighted that The Winter Palace has met with such overwhelming interest and support. I like to think that every novel I finish is better than the previous one, but in the end all a writer can do is tell a story. The rest depends on readers,” said Stachniak.

Faculty of Business Financial Planning students take bronze in CIFP Case Challenge Event

November 30, 2011

Financial Planning students Steven Hole, Rohan Sharma and Chris Hoeppler took a solid bronze in the recent CIFP Case Challenge Event

Sheridan Financial Planning students recently had an opportunity to test their skills against students from five other colleges at the annual Canadian Institute of Financial Planners (CIFP) Case Challenge Event placing third overall behind Centennial and George Brown College.  The Sheridan Faculty of Business team included Steven Hole, Rohan Sharma and Chris Hoeppler with Professor Sidney Liburd and Associate Dean, Rob Giberson.

Hosted by Centennial College in Scarborough, the November CIFP Case Challenge competition included participants from Centennial;  Sheridan Institute of Technology and Advanced Learning; George Brown College; Conestoga College Institute of Technology and Advanced Learning; Mohawk College; and Seneca College of Applied Arts and Technology.

“This is a great opportunity to showcase and demonstrate the fine job that these institutions are doing with financial services students,” said Keith Costello, president and CEO of The Canadian Institute of Financial Planning. “It’s a really good indication of where our highly skilled manpower in financial services is going to be coming from in the next 10 to 20 years.”

During the CIFP Case Challenge Event the students are divided into teams of two or three members, a financial case is given to the teams, and they have 90 minutes to craft a plan for that case. The teams each have 20 minutes to present their plans to a panel.  The panel asks follow-up questions about the plan following the presentation. The teams are marked on the criteria of time management, creativity and presentation skills.

This event marks the second CIFP competition, last year’s competition was held exclusively for Centennial College students. In future, Costello hopes more colleges across the province — and, eventually, the country — will participate in the competition.
