The Sheridan Advertising Management graduate Certificate program students had an opportunity to get up close and personal with recent grads at the recent networking event. More than 15 successful graduates of the program networked with current students in a speed-dating type of event that offered grads and students to easily mix and match career information and interests. Current post-graduate certificate students had an opportunity to meet with successful graduates of the Sheridan Advertising Management program to find out job opportunities, forge relationships and discover tips on securing good employment after graduation.
“We know that the students consider these type of graduate events important for them to forge relationships in the Advertising industry,” said Professor Peggy Barnwell, Coordinator of the Sheridan Advertising Management program.
“I had a great time at the networking event and was able to connect with many folks working in Media and Account Planning, said Wendy Shen, Advertising Management student.

Professor Mark Weaver to study DBA at Grenoble Ecole de Management
Sheridan Faculty of Business Professor and Banking and Wealth Management Coordinator, Mark Weaver will study for his doctorate (DBA) in Finance at Grenoble Ecole de Management in France.
Grenoble Ecole de Management is one of the few business schools (1% of schools worldwide) to possess the three accreditations that distinguish the leading international business schools: EQUIS (European Quality Improvement System), AACSB (The Association to Advance Collegiate Schools of Business) and AMBA (The Association of MBAs)
According to the Grenoble Ecole de Management website – the principal goal of this program is to educate scholars who will become faculty members in leading international business schools or universities. It is focused on quality with a maximum three students recruited per year, per concentration, and ensures the research production of students through high-quality supervision and training. It is a 4 to 5-year program: the first two years consist of courses, seminars plus joint research projects with faculty members and ends with a comprehensive examination. The remaining 2 or 3 years are devoted to dissertation work.
Weaver will begin intensive blocks of course work beginning November21 in France.
“It feels like a dream to be afforded this opportunity to integrate my previous retail and capital market exposure in Canada and China with a rigorous academic and professional European experience,” said Weaver.
Four concentrations are proposed to prospective students: Marketing, Organizational Theory and Human Resources Management, Strategy and Management of Innovation and Finance.
“Grenoble Ecole de Management is one of the premier business schools in France, holding all three of the leading international business school accreditations, EQUIS, AACSB, and AMBA. Roksana Sobota, Sally Burgess and Andrew Staples at the new Advisement Centre HMC
Sheridan Faculty of Business students are able to access one-stop Student Services at the Advisement Centre located at the new Hazel McCallion Campus located in Mississauga. Students and visitors to the new HMC are greeted at the new main entrance of the campus by Student Success Officers Andrew Staples and Roksana Sobota who provide support for nearly every inquiry they face. Questions that can’t immediately be resolved with Success Officers Staples and Sobota can easily be referred to the right connection just inside the spacious Advisement Centre.
The new one-stop concept Advisement Centre houses members of Student Advisement, Accessible Learning, Counseling, Cooperative Education, Registrar’s Office, and International Student Services all at one central location.
“This new one-stop model is something that all colleges want and because we were creating a completely new physical space with the Hazel McCallion campus, we were able to give the concept priority and include it in the initial design,” says Student Advisor, Sally Burgess.
Weekly team meetings are held with key players at HMC Advisement Centre, including First Year Business Coordinator Carole Bowman, in order to keep the facility consistently responding to and anticipating HMC student needs. Currently the Davis Campus Students Services are being renovated to offer the same style one-stop Student Services to students there.

Susan Shepley, Faculty of Business Liaison Librarian
Did you know that Susan Shepley, Sheridan’s Business Liaison Librarian, can connect you with tools to monitor the latest trends in business, teach your students how to be savvy information seekers, show you how to access the massive invisible web to find those resources not available through Google?
Based at the Hazel McCallion Campus, Susan Shepley helps students to research by mining databases like Factiva, LexisNexis, and Euromonitor, which many students will encounter when they graduate into the business world. Shepley works closely with faculty to design research workshops tailored to specific assignments or learning outcomes.
“When people think of librarians, they tend to think just of books,” says Shepley, “but I deal in information – social media, specialized research databases, data visualization, statistics, grey literature, and the invisible web.”

Susan Shepley works with students to improve their research skills.
Recently, Susan worked with Professor Linda Gowda to design a Current Events Research Workshop for International Business students that highlighted techniques for monitoring global trends, news stories, and the international business environment. Shepley and Gowda created hands-on activities for students to discover where to find reliable research for making smart business decisions.
“A true example of experiential learning, the integrated workshop not only benefited students; Susan and I also learned much from the session,” said Professor Gowda.
Working with Professor Sarah Carter, Shepley created a customized research guide for students embedded inside the Business Communications SLATE course template.
Before joining Sheridan, Susan was Social Sciences Librarian at McMaster University where she was embedded into curriculum for programs like the School of Labour Studies. Shepley collaborated with faculty, leading workshops and providing ongoing research support for student capstone projects. At the Saskatchewan Institute of Applied Science & Technology, Shepley was a Distance Education Librarian where she focused on e-learning. Shepley holds MLIS, University of Western Ontario, MA (History), University of Waterloo, BA (History), King’s University College.
If you are interested in trying out some new strategies related to information and research, contact Susan at x2472 to discuss how you can work together.

William Holmes, Dean, Sheridan Faculty of Business and his assistant, Stella Coleman point out the fourth floor Faculty of Business offices at HMC.
Sheridan College will receive $60 million in funding from the McGuinty Government to construct the second phase of its new Hazel McCallion Campus in Mississauga. Phase Two construction is expected to begin in late 2012, following community consultation to develop detailed plans for the new facility. Phase Two will accommodate an additional full-time 3,500 business students, bringing the total enrolment potential to 5,260 when the second phase at the Hazel McCallion Campus opens in 2014.
The first phase of the HMC opens this September, and will accommodate 1,760 students, primarily enrolled in business diploma and post-graduate programs. Enrolment in most programs had already reached capacity by March of this year.
“The enthusiastic response to the first phase of our Mississauga campus has confirmed the growing demand for higher education in the region,” said Dr. Jeff Zabudsky, President and CEO. “The new building is vital to helping us meet this demand, by providing the space and facilities that will enable more Mississauga residents to pursue diplomas and degrees closer to home. This investment by the Ontario government is helping our students get the best possible education to succeed.”
“This announcement recognizes the outstanding positive response to the launch of Phase I of the Hazel McCallion Campus. It is a fantastic opportunity for Sheridan to continue to further its mandate to provide high quality, leading edge applied undergraduate education to the students in the Brampton-Mississauga-Oakville corridor,” said Dr. William Holmes, Dean, Sheridan Faculty of Business.

Graduates of Sheridan's graduate program in Advertising Management return to network with program students.
Members of Sheridan’s graduate certificate program Advertising Management recently held their networking event with graduates of their program to meet, greet and network. More than a dozen recent graduates shared their job search and employment experiences with members currently in the program.

Advertising Management students network at the recent event.
Current students in the program commented about how beneficial this type of event is to provide opportunities for them to ask questions of the recent graduates about the transitions from being a student in the program to actually working in the advertising industry. Most of the Advertising Management students already possess degrees in another field of study and are attending Sheridan’s one-year graduate certificate program to refine their opportunities of getting work in the advertising industry.
“It was great getting to talk to people who were in our situation only a few years ago. It certainly reassured me that advertising is the right industry for me. Everyone there was really friendly and helpful and I could easily say it has been the most helpful networking experience I have had thus far,” said Timothy Simpson, Advertising Management student.
Graduates of the program, representing many different advertising agencies, were scattered about the room to allow students to interact with them and ask questions about securing and managing a satisfying career in advertising.
“The annual graduate networking event allows for current students to get a glimpse into the experiences, successes and obstacles that come with entering the advertising industry. It is a great atmosphere where students can relax and relate to us on a different level from their teachers because as graduates we were in the same position a few years ago. It is such an amazing night, filled with positivity and support for these students who are filled with uncertainty, excitement and genuine interest. As a graduate, you feel as though you are contributing to the program that has allowed you to fulfil your career goals. As long as Peggy Barnwell, program coordinator, asks me to come back, I will be there every year,” said Alana Roach, Marketing Communications Specialist, Bell Canada.

Advertising Management students network a recent event
Graduates of the program at the networking event included: Cristian Tesoro, Senior Associate, Mindshare, James Clark, Project Manager, Indusblue Inc., Jose Camarena, Account Manager, Torstar Digital, Judie Rodrigues, Strategist, OMD, Katie Manor, Digital Strategist, OMD, Laura Sarginson, Account Director, JAM Direct, Lara Ruggeri, Jr. Marketing Coordinator, Tayco, Lexy Khoo, Associate – Planning, Excelerator, Mario Lio Account Coordinator, Shaw Media, Megan Metzak, Associate Planner, Mindshare, Raquel Malaga, Media Coordinator, Wunderman, Alana Roach, Marketing Communications Specialist, Bell Canada, Todd Bennie, Account Executive, InField Marketing Group.
“It was a great event put on by the faculty this year (as it was last year too!). It’s always a great opportunity to meet with the upcoming grads as I found it to be a huge help when I was still in school. It’s great to see such passion by the students and professionalism as some even followed up the next day thanking me for my time. The informal atmosphere really made talking to the students much more personal as we were all able to not just share advice, but stories about actually being involved in the industry. It’s always a great honor being asked to come back and I look forward to it,” said Cristian Tesoro, Senior Associate, Mindshare.
