Faculty of Business Financial Planning students take bronze in CIFP Case Challenge Event

November 30, 2011

Financial Planning students Steven Hole, Rohan Sharma and Chris Hoeppler took a solid bronze in the recent CIFP Case Challenge Event

Sheridan Financial Planning students recently had an opportunity to test their skills against students from five other colleges at the annual Canadian Institute of Financial Planners (CIFP) Case Challenge Event placing third overall behind Centennial and George Brown College.  The Sheridan Faculty of Business team included Steven Hole, Rohan Sharma and Chris Hoeppler with Professor Sidney Liburd and Associate Dean, Rob Giberson.

Hosted by Centennial College in Scarborough, the November CIFP Case Challenge competition included participants from Centennial;  Sheridan Institute of Technology and Advanced Learning; George Brown College; Conestoga College Institute of Technology and Advanced Learning; Mohawk College; and Seneca College of Applied Arts and Technology.

“This is a great opportunity to showcase and demonstrate the fine job that these institutions are doing with financial services students,” said Keith Costello, president and CEO of The Canadian Institute of Financial Planning. “It’s a really good indication of where our highly skilled manpower in financial services is going to be coming from in the next 10 to 20 years.”

During the CIFP Case Challenge Event the students are divided into teams of two or three members, a financial case is given to the teams, and they have 90 minutes to craft a plan for that case. The teams each have 20 minutes to present their plans to a panel.  The panel asks follow-up questions about the plan following the presentation. The teams are marked on the criteria of time management, creativity and presentation skills.

This event marks the second CIFP competition, last year’s competition was held exclusively for Centennial College students. In future, Costello hopes more colleges across the province — and, eventually, the country — will participate in the competition.

Sheridan Professor Doug Greenwood receives OCMC Award of Excellence in recognition at 2011 event

November 28, 2011

Marketing professor, Doug Greenwood is 2011 recipient of the OCMC Award of Excellence

Professor Doug Greenwood, Sheridan Faculty of Business is the recipient of the Ontario Colleges’ Marketing Competition (OCMC) Award of Excellence for 2011.

Each year, one individual, college or sponsor is recognized with the OCMC Award of Excellence in recognition of the exceptional work in furtherance of this annual college marketing competition.

“The Award of Excellence was a total surprise to me -  it was an honor to be recognized by the OCMC provincial representatives with the award. The meat and potatoes of our work at Sheridan on OCMC is the team selection and the week to week training we do with students which then culminates in the event itself. Awards like this are the gravy, but the gravy is very nice indeed,’ said Greenwood.

Previous recipients of the OCMC Award of Excellence include 2010 Stephen Janisse, St. Clair College, 2009 Pat Kolodziejski, Mohawk College, 2008 Marianne Mirando, Seneca College, 2007 Dwight Dyson, Centennial College, 2006 McGraw-Hill Ryerson Limited, Pearson Education Canada and Thomson Nelson, 2005 David Nowell Sheridan College, 2004  Barb Watts, Georgian College, 2003 Noni Stukel, Algonquin College, and 2002 Kip Tuckwell, St. Lawrence College.

Lisa Symons and David Nowell present The Lydiatt Award to Bryan Abichandani, Centennial College

David Nowell presented the fifth annual William and Margaret Lydiatt Award to Centennial College student Bryan Abichandani at the recent Ontario Colleges’ Marketing Competition (OCMC).

Created by Sheridan College Professor David Nowell through an inheritance from the Lydiatt family, The Lydiatt Award commemorates two remarkable Canadians. William Lydiatt gave Marketing Magazine its name and was its publisher for 36 of the 100 plus years during which that magazine has been such a part of our profession. Margaret Lydiatt was William’s favored niece and she supported him through illness later in his life.

The award is offered to OCMC competitors based on three criteria. A student who supports others and works exceptionally hard, demonstrates exceptional commitment to OCMC, and has overcome extraordinary adversity and inspires others.

While the award was conceived and created in 2006, it was approved by the OCMC organizing committee for award in 2007.  For 2006, The Lydiatt Award was a Sheridan College award and the winner was Chantelle Simard, whose Sheridan team-mates found her to be incredibly supportive of them. She also was a last-minute replacement for the Sheridan’s team in an OCMC event and gave extra effort to do well in it.

Other winners include in 2010 Scott Landry of Mohawk College, 2009 Shauna Proctor of Contestoga College, 2008 Algonquin Student Sarah Ormon, and 2007  Victoria George of Seneca College.  Sadly, Victoria George died in April 2009 after falling ill while on vacation in Mexico. What began as a severe asthma attack led to an emergency trip back to Canada where she died in hospital with her family by her side. All who knew Victoria George were devastated by the news.

Sheridan’s Faculty of Business film series Ethics in Business continues Tuesday November 29 at 7:00 pm in Room A145 at the Hazel McCallion Campus in Mississauga with Super Size Me, the story of Morgan Spurlock and his journey of epic proportions through a McDonalds only diet.

From the IMDB website:

Several legal suits have been brought against McDonald’s Restaurants that they are knowingly selling food that is unhealthy. Some of the court decisions have stated that the plaintiffs would have a claim if they could prove that eating the food every day for every meal is dangerous. As such, documentarian Morgan Spurlock conducts an unscientific experiment using himself as the guinea pig: eat only McDonald’s for thirty days, three meals a day. If he is asked by the clerk if he would like the meal super sized, he has to say yes. And by the end of the thirty days, he will have had to have eaten every single menu item at least once. Before starting the experiment, he is tested by three doctors – a general practitioner, a cardiologist and a gastroenterologist – who pronounce his general health to be outstanding. They will also monitor him over the thirty days to ensure that he is not placing his health into irreparable damage.

Sheridan’s film series continues next Tuesday at 7:00 pm with Inside Job.

When Sheridan Student Services group were looking for someone to give a motivational talk to their Student Admissions Representative (STARs) the first person who came to mind was Mahfuz Chowdury.

Chowdury, a second year Faculty of Business Marketing student located at the Trafalgar Campus in Oakville, has taken his life experiences and his entrepreneurial spirit to re-invent himself as a motivational speaker. Chowdury shares his story in his seminars on how personal development has opened doors for him. He stresses the importance of always keeping a positive attitude. Chowdhury’s message to his audience is simple – always keep a positive attitude.

“It is easy to have a positive attitude when everything is going right, but a champion has a positive attitude when everything is going wrong,” said Chowdhury.

Chowdhury’s venture is called Project Reinvention and his goal is to help students reinvent themselves through personal development which he defines as any activity that helps a person become self-aware and therefore help improve themself.

Alisha Denis, On-Campus Recruitment Officer for Trafalgar Campus explains the effect that Mahfuz had on the Sheridan STARs. “It’s never easy to get into the minds of a particular audience to influence them, but Mahfuz’s energy and words not only got into their minds but also their hearts. Our students left energized, informed, motivated, excited, and empowered. You can’t ask for more from a motivational speaker. I look forward to following Mahfuz’s career and discovering how I may use his talents next,” said Denis.

Chowdhury has spoken to student groups several times for Sheridan Student Services.

Mahfuz Chowdhury is also a member of the Sheridan Business program’s Ontario Colleges’ Marketing Competition team and will compete in the Marketing Case Event with team partner Marc Brajak at the coming OCMC event, hosted this year by Humber College November 24-25.

Publicity poster from Food Inc.

Sheridan’s Faculty of Business film series Ethics in Business continues Tuesday November 8 at 7:00 pm in Room A145 at the Hazel McCallion Campus in Mississauga with Food Inc., a look at how food is now produced for the consumer market and the surrounding ethical challenges facing legitimate producers.

From the film website:

In Food, Inc., filmmaker Robert Kenner lifts the veil on our nation’s food industry, exposing the highly mechanized underbelly that has been hidden from the American consumer with the consent of our government’s regulatory agencies, USDA and FDA. Our nation’s food supply is now controlled by a handful of corporations that often put profit ahead of consumer health, the livelihood of the American farmer, the safety of workers and our own environment. We have bigger-breasted chickens, the perfect pork chop, herbicide-resistant soybean seeds, even tomatoes that won’t go bad, but we also have new strains of E. coli—the harmful bacteria that causes illness for an estimated 73,000 Americans annually. We are riddled with widespread obesity, particularly among children, and an epidemic level of diabetes among adults.

Sheridan Faculty of Business Dean, Bill Holmes is pleased to present the Tuesday evening film series Ethics in Business at the Hazel McCallion campus. The film series covers a number of issues in business ethics from corporate responsibility to social media begins Tuesday October 18 at 7:00 pm in room A145 at HMC and runs for eight weeks concluding on Tuesday December 6, 2011. All showing times will start at 7:00 pm.

Mississauga Mayor Hazel McCallion and Calgary’s Mayor Neshi were in attendance as various task forces presented five “big ideas” for Mississauga on the waterfront, diversity, human services (health and social services), post-secondary education, and jobs.

The ideas include a waterfront development corporation to determine the fate of 450 acres of land; a business network for UTM, Sheridan College and two local hospitals; an innovation centre comparable to MaRS in downtown Toronto for start-up businesses; a “neighbourhoods-at-risk strategy” for social services in one community; and a diversity council for the large immigrant community.

Summit participant and Sheridan Faculty of Business, Dean, William Holmes praised the coordinators, faculty and students of the Office Administration programs.

“Our students showed an exceptional level of professionalism and I was proud to have them at the Summit representing Sheridan and the Faculty of Business, please accept my thanks and sincere appreciation”, said Holmes.

The Mississauga Summit is the fourth in an ongoing series that began in 2007 and is modeled after Greater Toronto’s CivicAction — a way to engage residents by having them contribute their own plans.

Sheridan Business Process Management students take part in Diwali celebrations.

Diwali celebration lights up the Hazel McCallion Campus as Sheridan Business Process Management program students hosted a Diwali celebration recently. Diwali, also known as the festival of lights, is one of the most significant festivals in Hinduism.  Faculty of Business students and faculty from several post graduate programs gathered to mix and mingle and enjoy the festivities.

“The students put on a great event,” said Scott Hadley, Business Process Management Coordinator. “The celebration not only introduced students and faculty to the Diwali Festival but also offered a memorable night for international students new to Canada to feel at home at Sheridan.”

The event was planned and executed by the Business Process Management Leadership Development class. Students worked together organizing the decor, music, and of course a delicious Indian potluck buffet.

“BPM student Khushboo Ghosh lead planning efforts with the support of her classmates.  The class achieved their vision of launching a memorable event which drew students from other Faculty of Business programs, allowing students to meet peers and enhance their social networks,” said Golnaz Golnaraghi, Business Process Management program  Leadership Development Professor.

There were many highlights at the event. BPM student Ankush Chodvaya presented the history and significance of Diwali. Faculty put on a commendable effort competing in a hot pepper eating contest against students. Guests participated in traditional dancing, games and mehndi applications. Mehndi is the art of applying decorative henna drawings, usually on the hand.
