The Sheridan Advertising Management graduate Certificate program students had an opportunity to get up close and personal with recent grads at the recent networking event. More than 15 successful graduates of the program networked with current students in a speed-dating type of event that offered grads and students to easily mix and match career information and interests. “We know that the students consider these type of graduate events important for them to forge relationships in the Advertising industry,” said Professor Peggy Barnwell, Coordinator of the Sheridan Advertising Management program.
“I had a great time at the networking event and was able to connect with many folks working in Media and Account Planning, said Wendy Shen, Advertising Management student.

Sheridan Office Administration students and graduates supplied administrative support to the Mississauga Summit 2011
More than 25 Sheridan Faculty of Business, Office Administration students, graduates and faculty volunteered to supply scribe and administrative services to the participants of the recent Mississauga Summit.
The Mississauga Summit, held at the University of Toronto, Mississauga (UTM) brought together participants to brainstorm five Big Ideas for the future of the City of Mississauga.
Coordinated by Nancy Barrington, the Sheridan Faculty of Business, Office Administration students and graduates volunteered in a variety of ways – mainly by e-recording, using their laptops, the highlights of each presentation, and assisting with distributing information to participants, taking pictures, participating in the audience, and networking with the community. Lisa Mendes and Kellie Hayward, professors in the Office Administration programs, also assisted with organizing the students during the Summit.

Sheridan Office Administration students with Mayor Hazel McCallion at the recent Mississauga Summit
Mississauga Mayor Hazel McCallion and Calgary’s Mayor Neshi were in attendance as various task forces presented five “big ideas” for Mississauga on the waterfront, diversity, human services (health and social services), post-secondary education, and jobs.
The ideas include a waterfront development corporation to determine the fate of 450 acres of land; a business network for UTM, Sheridan College and two local hospitals; an innovation centre comparable to MaRS in downtown Toronto for start-up businesses; a “neighbourhoods-at-risk strategy” for social services in one community; and a diversity council for the large immigrant community.
Summit participant and Sheridan Faculty of Business, Dean, William Holmes praised the coordinators, faculty and students of the Office Administration programs.
“Our students showed an exceptional level of professionalism and I was proud to have them at the Summit representing Sheridan and the Faculty of Business, please accept my thanks and sincere appreciation”, said Holmes.
The Mississauga Summit is the fourth in an ongoing series that began in 2007 and is modeled after Greater Toronto’s CivicAction — a way to engage residents by having them contribute their own plans.

William Holmes, Dean, Sheridan Faculty of Business and his assistant, Stella Coleman point out the fourth floor Faculty of Business offices at HMC.
Sheridan College will receive $60 million in funding from the McGuinty Government to construct the second phase of its new Hazel McCallion Campus in Mississauga. Phase Two construction is expected to begin in late 2012, following community consultation to develop detailed plans for the new facility. Phase Two will accommodate an additional full-time 3,500 business students, bringing the total enrolment potential to 5,260 when the second phase at the Hazel McCallion Campus opens in 2014.
The first phase of the HMC opens this September, and will accommodate 1,760 students, primarily enrolled in business diploma and post-graduate programs. Enrolment in most programs had already reached capacity by March of this year.
“The enthusiastic response to the first phase of our Mississauga campus has confirmed the growing demand for higher education in the region,” said Dr. Jeff Zabudsky, President and CEO. “The new building is vital to helping us meet this demand, by providing the space and facilities that will enable more Mississauga residents to pursue diplomas and degrees closer to home. This investment by the Ontario government is helping our students get the best possible education to succeed.”
“This announcement recognizes the outstanding positive response to the launch of Phase I of the Hazel McCallion Campus. It is a fantastic opportunity for Sheridan to continue to further its mandate to provide high quality, leading edge applied undergraduate education to the students in the Brampton-Mississauga-Oakville corridor,” said Dr. William Holmes, Dean, Sheridan Faculty of Business.

Advertising Program Coordinator, Peggy Barnwell and 19 program graduates networked with students recently.
The Sheridan Faculty of Business programs in Advertising recently held their Advertising Networking Events with eager advertising students networking with the more than 32 recent Advertising Management and Advertising program graduates in attendance. Advertising program coordinator, Peggy Barnwell and Sara Bernard, president of the Sheridan Advertising Association organized the two events in order to bring together current students with recent graduates who provided real information about career paths and career potential in the advertising industry.

Anne Sutherland, Partner, New Thinking (Sheridan Advertising 1985)
Keynote speaker of the undergraduate program networking event was Anne Sutherland, Partner, New Thinking, and Sheridan Advertising Graduate 1985 who spoke about trends in the advertising industry and strategies to capitalize on those trends.
Sarah Thornely, DDBCanada, Sheridan 2008 presented a clip of a recent samples of advertising campaigns Sheridan graduates have had a chance to work on, which included among the many presented – TD Canada Trust, Cialis, and Fallsview Casino.

Advertising students watch a clip of graduates advertising work
“The students had lots of good questions: wanting to know how I got started in the industry, what was my favourite client/campaign I had worked on, and what advice I had for them to be successful. I think its great that we were able to show the students some of the creative past grads have worked on. Its one thing to hear about what we do, it’s a completely different experience to view a commercial currently on air and know that a Sheridan grad was a part of it. Its because of opportunities like this that makes the Sheridan Advertising program the best,” said Sarah Thornely, Account Executive, DDBCanada.

“Once again I think Sheridan has gone all out for their students and put on a fantastic event! A great opportunity for students to meet with some past grads in the industry and just as excellent an opportunity for me to meet some eager, passionate and exciting students. Looking forward to working with them in the near future,” said Serene Fattouh, Account Supervisor, Draftfcb Toronto.
“Grad Night gives advertising students a great opportunity to not only network with Sheridan Advertising grads but also gives us an opportunity to find out what its really like in the industry for someone who’s just starting out. I think it’s invaluable for anyone who is about to graduate to have the chance to talk to the grads and it was a great experience,” said Jayme Bennett, Advertising student.
Also in attendance to network with students was Adam Ball, Account Coordinator, Brandworks, Eric Carvalho, Account Coordinator, Maclaren, Dan Giusti Account Executive, Blammo, Shane Holmes, Account Coordinator, Grip Limited, Amanda Patchett, Client Services Coordinator, Quarry Integrated Communications, Alethea Reston, Account Executive, Due North Communications, Lindsay Sherry, Soda And Tonic Advertising,

Graduates of Sheridan's graduate program in Advertising Management return to network with program students.
Members of Sheridan’s graduate certificate program Advertising Management recently held their networking event with graduates of their program to meet, greet and network. More than a dozen recent graduates shared their job search and employment experiences with members currently in the program.

Advertising Management students network at the recent event.
Current students in the program commented about how beneficial this type of event is to provide opportunities for them to ask questions of the recent graduates about the transitions from being a student in the program to actually working in the advertising industry. Most of the Advertising Management students already possess degrees in another field of study and are attending Sheridan’s one-year graduate certificate program to refine their opportunities of getting work in the advertising industry.
“It was great getting to talk to people who were in our situation only a few years ago. It certainly reassured me that advertising is the right industry for me. Everyone there was really friendly and helpful and I could easily say it has been the most helpful networking experience I have had thus far,” said Timothy Simpson, Advertising Management student.
Graduates of the program, representing many different advertising agencies, were scattered about the room to allow students to interact with them and ask questions about securing and managing a satisfying career in advertising.
“The annual graduate networking event allows for current students to get a glimpse into the experiences, successes and obstacles that come with entering the advertising industry. It is a great atmosphere where students can relax and relate to us on a different level from their teachers because as graduates we were in the same position a few years ago. It is such an amazing night, filled with positivity and support for these students who are filled with uncertainty, excitement and genuine interest. As a graduate, you feel as though you are contributing to the program that has allowed you to fulfil your career goals. As long as Peggy Barnwell, program coordinator, asks me to come back, I will be there every year,” said Alana Roach, Marketing Communications Specialist, Bell Canada.

Advertising Management students network a recent event
Graduates of the program at the networking event included: Cristian Tesoro, Senior Associate, Mindshare, James Clark, Project Manager, Indusblue Inc., Jose Camarena, Account Manager, Torstar Digital, Judie Rodrigues, Strategist, OMD, Katie Manor, Digital Strategist, OMD, Laura Sarginson, Account Director, JAM Direct, Lara Ruggeri, Jr. Marketing Coordinator, Tayco, Lexy Khoo, Associate – Planning, Excelerator, Mario Lio Account Coordinator, Shaw Media, Megan Metzak, Associate Planner, Mindshare, Raquel Malaga, Media Coordinator, Wunderman, Alana Roach, Marketing Communications Specialist, Bell Canada, Todd Bennie, Account Executive, InField Marketing Group.
“It was a great event put on by the faculty this year (as it was last year too!). It’s always a great opportunity to meet with the upcoming grads as I found it to be a huge help when I was still in school. It’s great to see such passion by the students and professionalism as some even followed up the next day thanking me for my time. The informal atmosphere really made talking to the students much more personal as we were all able to not just share advice, but stories about actually being involved in the industry. It’s always a great honor being asked to come back and I look forward to it,” said Cristian Tesoro, Senior Associate, Mindshare.

Sheridan Tourism & Travel graduate Rebecca Schuurman
Rebecca Schuurman, a 2009 Sheridan Faculty of Business, Tourism & Travel graduate is now a Flight Attendant with WestJet.
“A recruiting representative from Westjet came and spoke to us about their company. After that workshop, I applied and got an interview,” said Schuurman.
The workshop, one of many planned by Tourism and Travel faculty to introduce their students and assist them to network with industry personnel, was part of program coordinator Victoria Renton’s Air Travel and Tariff class.
After being hired by WestJet, Schuurman waited in a pool position before being assigned as a Customer Service Representative at Hamilton Airport, and then six months later she was working as a flight attendant.
“Life as a flight attendant has it’s ups and downs – both literally and figuratively. It is not always easy being a flight attendant, but at the end of the day, a simple thank-you from one of our guests, or a compliment on a job well done make it all worthwhile in my office in the sky,” said Schuurman.
Rebecca says because of her studies at Sheridan she was able to get the contact information that she needed to apply to Westjet, and the knowledge that she needed about the airline industry.
“I will always have the skills that I learned at school, and I will always think back on the great times and friendships that were made at Sheridan. Thank-you Sheridan for helping me realize my dream, ” said Schuurman.

Peter Bouffard facilitates the Creative Visioning Workshop for the new School of Business campus to be located at Mississauga City Centre.
More than 100 Sheridan School of Business faculty explored the challenge to envision “what could be…” for Sheridan’s new Mississauga City Centre campus. Assisted by the Creative Campus committee, School of Business professor Peter Bouffard and facilitators lead his colleagues through a visioning process

Peggy Barnwell records her group's visioning.
that challenged School of Business faculty to question the relevance and effectiveness of every current decision making process, every initiative, and every academic act that happens or will happen at Sheridan College.
Over the period of several hours School of Business faculty representing more than 30 programs brainstormed the questions “What new and innovative things might we do in the School of Business to release the full potential of each student?’, and “What new and innovative things will transform our School of Business into a world leader?”

Banking and Wealth Management program Coordinator, Henry Katz is completely immersed in the visioning process.
Groups of eight faculty and facilitators grappled with the questions in the context of the elements of space, technology, community, curriculum, and inter-professional in order to explore the impact of the visioning process and the proposed ideas on the shape of the new Sheridan School of Business. Each faculty participant were invited to add to the group vision recorded and share with the entire group.

Doug Greenwood shares his group's vision with the workshop.
A result of the Creative Visioning process will be to share the envisioned ideas with other participants at Sheridan College and to post the results of the workshop for reflection in the School of Business and the college at large.
The Sheridan School of Business is slated to move some programs to the new campus for September 2011, and to completely move the School of Business several years after that.
