Simone Birthwright, Mahfuz Chowdhury, Angela Wigfield, Sylvia You, Alisha Dennis, Arianne Martin

When Sheridan Student Services group were looking for someone to give a motivational talk to their Student Admissions Representative (STARs) the first person who came to mind was Mahfuz Chowdury.

Chowdury, a second year Faculty of Business Marketing student located at the Trafalgar Campus in Oakville, has taken his life experiences and his entrepreneurial spirit to re-invent himself as a motivational speaker. Chowdury shares his story in his seminars on how personal development has opened doors for him. He stresses the importance of always keeping a positive attitude. Chowdhury’s message to his audience is simple – always keep a positive attitude.

“It is easy to have a positive attitude when everything is going right, but a champion has a positive attitude when everything is going wrong,” said Chowdhury.

Chowdhury’s venture is called Project Reinvention and his goal is to help students reinvent themselves through personal development which he defines as any activity that helps a person become self-aware and therefore help improve themself.

Alisha Denis, On-Campus Recruitment Officer for Trafalgar Campus explains the effect that Mahfuz had on the Sheridan STARs. “It’s never easy to get into the minds of a particular audience to influence them, but Mahfuz’s energy and words not only got into their minds but also their hearts. Our students left energized, informed, motivated, excited, and empowered. You can’t ask for more from a motivational speaker. I look forward to following Mahfuz’s career and discovering how I may use his talents next,” said Denis.

Chowdhury has spoken to student groups several times for Sheridan Student Services.

Mahfuz Chowdhury is also a member of the Sheridan Business program’s Ontario Colleges’ Marketing Competition team and will compete in the Marketing Case Event with team partner Marc Brajak at the coming OCMC event, hosted this year by Humber College November 24-25.

Research assistants Sarrazin and Voelk work on the Aging in Place project for SERC

Sheridan Faculty of Business students Alexi Voelk and Andrew Sarrazin, spent the summer as research assistants working with Pat Spadafora, Director, Sheridan Elder Research Centre (SERC) on a NSERC grant called Aging in Place: Optimizing Health Outcomes through Technology, Design and Social Inclusion.  The proposal question:  How can Sheridan and the Sheridan Elder Research Centre (SERC) best collaborate with, prepare and support small and medium-sized businesses to respond to the significant market opportunities presented by this demographic phenomenon?

“This research is important to SERC because one of our mandates is to encourage small to medium size businesses to recognize the demographic shift and to support them in learning more about working with, marketing to and designing for mature consumers,” said Spadafora.

Business and Industry Knowledge Exchange Network participants discuss issue around an aging demographic.

Students Voelk and Sarrazin were hired to work on business aspects of the grant. Voelk worked with pigeon* branding + design, conducting background research on marketing to mature consumers and designing products for mature consumers. Sarrazin’s focus was the business of aging and he assisted in the launch of  the Business and Industry Knowledge Exchange Network (BIKEN). The intent of the group is to help small and medium size businesses to diversity and to grow their businesses in response to an aging demographic.

“The Aging in Place research will also provide valuable opportunities for Sheridan students in capstone project courses to create and administer their own practical research project using SERC’s current research facilities. Interested students should be encouraged to contact SERC for more information,” said Spadafora

The BIKEN team organized two breakfast meetings with the goal of bringing businesses together to recognize this demographic shift and to support them in learning more about mature consumers.

Faculty of Business Professor Kathleen Begin recently completed the Elder Planning Counselor (EPC) designation and was interested to know how Sheridan College and the business world was responding to the aging population and the ensuing challenges and opportunities.

“I think we have a responsibility to our students to prepare them for what they will experience in their careers and personal lives. We can do this by building examples and cases in our classes that reflect different demographic groups,” said Begin.

Alexi and Andrew were part of a cohort of 13 research assistants recruited from Faculty of Business, Faculty of Applied Science and Technology, Faculty of Arts, Animation, and Design and Faculty of Applied Health and Community Service.   In addition, Faculty of Business Professor Cathryn Oliver, was hired to support Advertising students Voelk and Sarrazin, both of whom are continuing as part-time researchers into the fall semester.

Sheridan College Tourism and Travel students visit iconic Delta Chelsea Hotel in Toronto

April 4, 2011

60 Sheridan College Tourism and Travel students prepare to visit Toronto's Delta Chelsea Hotel with professor Omar Smith

Ensuring that Sheridan’s Tourism and Travel students get real hands-on training is one of the most important aspects of the two-year program, says Victoria Renton, coordinator of Sheridan College’s Tourism and Travel program.  With that mandate in mind, 60 Sheridan Tourism and Travel students, accompanied by instructor Omar Smith, recently visited Canada’s largest hotel, The Delta Chelsea, located at 33 Gerrard St. in the centre of Toronto’s Entertainment District.

“The familiarization trip gave our Sheridan students the opportunity to see meeting and convention space, guest rooms (suites and standard rooms) and front and back of the house areas at one of the largest hotel operations in the city,” said Renton.

Delta Chelsea Room

Students were given guided tours of the rooms they will be booking for clients, an in-depth look at the convention centre space and its functions, and an inside look at hotel operations from the guest perspective at the front of house and from the hotel’s perspective through the actual back of the house operation.

“The trip is useful to the students as it gives them a baseline standardization of what a Canadian 4 star hotel offers. They can use this as a guide for all hotels in Canada when it comes service, quality, and facilities,” said Renton.

“Visiting the Delta Chelsea with my class was a great insight into the accommodation aspect of travel and tourism. Seeing the mechanics of how a larger scale hotel operates was an eye opening experience and made me realize which sector in the travel and tourism industry I would like to to get into, ” said Stephen Crawford, first year Tourism and Travel student.

Honeymoon Suite

Sheridan College Tourism and Travel students were invited for an up-close and personal look at Delta Hotel’s brand awareness, Delta accommodations, their target clientele, rates, decor, products, services and ambiance.

“The students had lots of good questions: wanting to know how I got started in the industry, what was my favourite client/campaign I had worked on, and what advice I had for them to be successful. I think its great that we were able to show the students some of the creative past grads have worked on.  Its one thing to hear about what we do, it’s a completely different experience to view a commercial currently on air and know that a Sheridan grad was a part of it. Its because of opportunities like this that makes the Sheridan Advertising program the best,” said Sarah Thornely, Account Executive, DDBCanada.

“Once again I think Sheridan has gone all out for their students and put on a fantastic event! A great opportunity for students to meet with some past grads in the industry and just as excellent an opportunity for me to meet some eager, passionate and exciting students. Looking forward to working with them in the near future,” said Serene Fattouh, Account Supervisor, Draftfcb Toronto.

“Grad Night gives advertising students a great opportunity to not only network with Sheridan Advertising grads but also gives us an opportunity to find out what its really like in the industry for someone who’s just starting out. Sheridan Graduate Advertising Management program hosts networking event for current students

March 14, 2011

Graduates of Sheridan's graduate program in Advertising Management return to network with program students.

Members of Sheridan’s graduate certificate program Advertising Management recently held their networking event with graduates of their program to meet, greet and network. More than a dozen recent graduates shared their job search and employment experiences with members currently in the program.

Advertising Management students network at the recent event.

Current students in the program commented about how beneficial this type of event is to provide opportunities for them to ask questions of the recent graduates about the transitions from being a student in the program to actually working in the advertising industry.  Most of the Advertising Management students already possess degrees in another field of study and are attending Sheridan’s  one-year graduate certificate program to refine their opportunities of getting work in the advertising industry.

“It was great getting to talk to people who were in our situation only a few years ago. It certainly reassured me that advertising is the right industry for me. Everyone there was really friendly and helpful and I could easily say it has been the most helpful networking experience I have had thus far,” said Timothy Simpson, Advertising Management student.

Graduates of the program, representing many different advertising agencies, were scattered about the room to allow students to interact with them and ask questions about securing and managing a satisfying career in advertising.

“The annual graduate networking event allows for current students to get a glimpse into the experiences, successes and obstacles that come with entering the advertising industry. It is a great atmosphere where students can relax and relate to us on a different level from their teachers because as graduates we were in the same position a few years ago. It is such an amazing night, filled with positivity and support for these students who are filled with uncertainty, excitement and genuine interest. As a graduate, you feel as though you are contributing to the program that has allowed you to fulfil your career goals. As long as Peggy Barnwell, program coordinator, asks me to come back, I will be there every year,” said Alana Roach, Marketing Communications Specialist, Bell Canada.

Advertising Management students network a recent event

Graduates of the program at the networking event included: Cristian Tesoro, Senior Associate, Mindshare, James Clark, Project Manager, Indusblue Inc., Jose Camarena, Account Manager, Torstar Digital, Judie Rodrigues, Strategist, OMD, Katie Manor, Digital Strategist, OMD, Laura Sarginson, Account Director, JAM Direct, Lara Ruggeri, Jr. Marketing Coordinator, Tayco, Lexy Khoo, Associate – Planning, Excelerator, Mario Lio Account Coordinator, Shaw Media, Megan Metzak, Associate Planner, Mindshare, Raquel Malaga, Media Coordinator, Wunderman, Alana Roach, Marketing Communications Specialist, Bell Canada, Todd Bennie, Account Executive, InField Marketing Group.

“It was a great event put on by the faculty this year (as it was last year too!). It’s always a great opportunity to meet with the upcoming grads as I found it to be a huge help when I was still in school. It’s great to see such passion by the students and professionalism as some even followed up the next day thanking me for my time. The informal atmosphere really made talking to the students much more personal as we were all able to not just share advice, but stories about actually being involved in the industry. It’s always a great honor being asked to come back and I look forward to it,” said Cristian Tesoro, Senior Associate, Mindshare.

February 23, 2011

Sheridan Tourism & Travel graduate Rebecca Schuurman

Rebecca Schuurman, a 2009 Sheridan Faculty of Business, Tourism & Travel graduate is now a Flight Attendant with WestJet.

“A recruiting representative from Westjet came and spoke to us about their company. After that workshop, I applied and got an interview,” said Schuurman.

The workshop, one of many planned by Tourism and Travel faculty to introduce their students and assist them to network with industry personnel, was part of program coordinator Victoria Renton’s Air Travel and Tariff class.
