Six students from the Faculty of Business recently participated in the inaugural Business Interview Competition held in the Residence Conference Centre at the Davis campus. The Sheridan Career Centre sponsored competition required students to participate in a preliminary event where they filed an application, a resume review, attended a career workshop and participated in a video interview submission. These submissions were then reviewed by Employment Consultants in the Career Centre and the students received feedback on how to prepare for the April 3 event.
The Sheridan Career Centre promoted the event as a way to help students gain valuable interview skills and learn how to use Optimal Resume (an on-line resource for Sheridan students), to boost a student’s career capital and provide an opportunity to meet with employers and receive immediate feedback.
The competition was set-up in a speed networking format, allowing students the opportunity to meet with all six judges from Winners, Staples, Wrigley’s, TekSystems and Technical Standards and Safety Authority TSSA. Prizes were awarded to the overall winners in first and second place. Nicole Whitewood, 3rd year Business Marketing student was this year’s 1st place winner and received a $250.00 gift certificate from Winners. Second place went to Jason Dunphy, a 3rd year Business Marketing student who received a $140 gift certificate from Staples. Each student received Sheridan professional portfolios to assist with their overall interview impression.
The feedback from the participants was unanimous – all of the students felt this was a fantastic event and gained valuable feedback to assist with their future job search strategies.
“The Business Interview Competition was a great opportunity for me to perfect the skills I’ll need after I graduate at the end of this month. I had the chance to network with 6 recruiters in a speed-networking style which allowed me to speak one-on-one with potential employers, without the pressures of an actual interview. The employers also provided feedback on what they’re looking at when they hire,” said Nicole Whitewood, first place winner.

“The Grip Juicer competition was the most realistic representation of working in the advertising industry that I have experienced. This was one of the most rewarding and self-enlightening experiences and even though it took a lot of hard work and dedication, I am now better prepared to enter the industry and couldn’t be more thrilled with the outcome,” said Meika Yeo, Sheridan Advertising Account Management student.
“In experiencing competitions such as the Grip Juicer it doesn’t get any more “real-world” than this. It has given me a taste of what it will really be like, and solidified this is the industry I want to be a part of,” said Tiffany Phillips.
As per the Grip Juicer Competition Rule Book, the competition is described as: “The Grip Juicer Competition is an annual advertising competition hosted by Grip. Mahfuz Chowdury, Sheridan Business graduate
Sheridan Faculty of Business student, Mahfuz Chowdry, is awarded the Canadian Association for Co-operative Education Award for Co-op Student of the Year.
Mahfuz completed his final Faculty of Business work term with Candybox Marketing in the Summer of 2012. Chowdury recognized the revolution happening within social media and saw it could be leveraged for business purposes. He sought a connection with Darrell Keezer, President of Candybox, and connected with him through LinkedIn. From there, he convinced Keezer to hire him for a social media marketing co-op position. At Candybox, his primary responsibility was to educate prospective clients seeking to integrate social media strategies as a part of their marketing plans. Chowdury applied his essential business-to-business sales techniques, marketing plan writing, and presentation skills to create and deliver workshops from his Sheridan marketing courses and started generating lucrative contracts for Candybox.
During his time at Candybox, he managed to double attendance in their Social Media workshops, acquired more than 1000 followers for the company’s Twitter and Facebook accounts, and created a buzz to achieve the highest number of sales for one of their biggest clients, Walk at Home. His work term evaluation was stellar and he was praised for his significant contributions to Candybox.
Born in Saudi Arabia, Chowdury moved to Mississauga with his parents who sought educational excellence for their son. He embraced college life at Sheridan through his involvement in academics, student organizations such as Enactus and as a Student Admission Representative. Not afraid of a challenge, Mahfuz is a stellar student who believes in positive self-growth and promotes his message through his own organization ‘Project Reinvention’ which has extended throughout Canada and internationally.
Mahfuz’s energy, enthusiasm and love of marketing is infectious. His smiling faces graces billboards, buses, websites and promotional material for Sheridan College as he represents Sheridan’s ideals of co-operative education and the integration of work and school. Chowdury has learned as much from the marketing co-op program as the marketing co-op program has learned from him.
As the voice for co-operative education in Canada, CAFCE assesses students’ achievements in job performance, academic performance and responsibility. They select one College and one University student throughout Canada in recognition of the students’ contributions to their employer, co-operative education and the community.

Sheridan Faculty of Business Advertising students Lindsay Cannon, Jason Dunphy and Erin McManus took a Bronze Award in their division at the annual Vanier College Case Event in Montreal. The Sheridan Advertising students competed recently along with students from 26 colleges from across Canada.
“Competing in the Vanier Case Competition was something I will never forget. I was able to work with exceptional coaches who demonstrated commitment, dedication and support throughout the entire process and I couldn’t have asked for better teammates. The learning experiences and memories made during Vanier will last a lifetime,” said Erin McManus.
“The most exciting part for me was getting to actually apply our education in a competitive nature and comparing other school’s work to ours, which is something you miss out on with OCMC because of the closed presentations. We bonded strongly as a team, this was an experience I’ll never forget,” said Lindsay Cannon.
The Vanier Case Challenge 2013 offers tough competition among the student teams from all of the competing schools. Each of the participating colleges fields a single team of three students to make a case presentation in front of a jury. “The Ontario Colleges’ Marketing Competition is a remarkable experience that helps you grow as a student and as an individual. It is a once in a lifetime opportunity that not everyone gets to experience, and it opens a world of possibilities, said Dalgleish.

Sheridan Engineering and Marketing students cooperated in the joint venture Day at The Races for Sheridan
In a joint venture, Sheridan College Faculty of Applied Science and Technology engineering and Faculty of Business marketing students organized the highly successful Day at the Races for Sheridan Formula SAE (Society of Automotive Engineers) Racing Car event recently at Sheridan’s Davis campus in Brampton. Remote car racing - one of the many events at A Day at the Races for Sheridan
Formula SAE is an engineering competition providing students with the opportunity to design, manufacture and tune performance vehicles geared at the enthusiast weekend autocross racer. Sheridan FAST Engineering students have been working to design and build the car and are enthusiastic about participating in a high level competition. Competitions are held at several locations across the globe, and with the help of their sponsors Panasonic, Brampton Firefighters and others, Sheridan plans to attend SAE East, Detroit, Michigan and SAE North, Barrie, Ontario.

Sheridan’s Formula SAE Racing Car project provides a unique opportunity for Engineering and Business students to work together to gain valuable real life experience. Students work with faculty, and automotive suppliers and business to design and build the car, and to plan and manage the business side.
Sheridan engineering student, Chris Matthews says “The experience has shown me how to take what I have learned in engineering, design and drafting and put it into practice. It is a real challenge to build the parts you have designed.”
Stefan Yasin, a Sheridan marketing student and car enthusiast described his experience as “Learning how the design-build process works going from software into a hands-on model (3 D printing) then to the final part. He noted seeing it go full circle connects all the pieces you learn in a practical way.”
