Nearly two dozen recent Sheridan Advertising graduates networked with current program students in a “speed-dating” format that allowed students to link up with the grads working in their chosen specialty. The event featured graduates placed at 24 individual tables ready to provide advice and experience to the current Advertising program students.

The annual event hosted by Peggy Barnwell, Advertising Program Coordinator, members of the faculty, and The Sheridan Advertising Association, featured an interactive evening with more than 20 graduates from the Advertising Program representing companies -  Draft FCB, DDB Canada, MacLaren McCann, Rain43, SodaandTonicMindshare, Carat Communications, Due North, Cundari, Olive Media, The Oakville Beaver and more, drew nearly 65 undergraduate students who were offered an excellent opportunity to ask questions and network with future employers and Sheridan graduates. In addition, students had an opportunity to watch a portfolio reel of the professional advertising work the grads have worked on.

“As it turns out, I made some amazing connections and I was also offered an interview at an agency,” said Phoebe Naiman, Advertising Management Student

“Until Grad Night I didn’t know what I wanted to do. Speaking to graduates reassured me that Advertising is my future,” said Meaghan Trueland, 3rd year Advertising.

“This event was amazing, I couldn’t have asked for a better networking opportunity,” said Kristy Stockman, 3rd year Advertising.

March 18, 2012

From left Financial Planning alumni Ian Calvert 2010, Matthew Sears 2010, Charandev Padda 2011, Paul Mannu 2011, Ryan Laverty 2005, and Lindsay Chisholm 2011.

Alumni of the Sheridan Faculty of Business Financial Planning post graduate Certificate program recently networked with the 2012 graduating class at the Hazel MacCallion Campus to share their work experiences and offer advice.

Alumni shared their overall journey since graduating from the Sheridan program, especially the rigorous exam experience of the CFP Level 1 Exam. Several graduates shared their personal study techniques and exam focus for the month leading up to the exam which is only written twice a year in June & December. Matthew Sears has written Phase 2 (The Capstone Exam) and Lindsay Chisholm is now preparing for the same exam, shared their thoughts on preparation techniques.

Ian Calvert who is currently employed at Dundee Wealth Management in Oakville, and Ryan Laverty who is now a manager at TD Canada Trust took hard copies of students’ resumes.

Ample time was available for questions, and especially for students to engage in some one-on-one networking with the alumni once the formal presentations were completed.

“Alumni and students have all expressed satisfaction at having had the opportunity to present, share and to listen,” said Program Advisor Sidney Liburd.

Liburd also had special thanks for the alumni, who without hesitation when asked, agreed to give up their personal time to share their various experiences with the current Financial Planning students.  Each alumni took the time to emphasize that not too long ago they sat in the same classrooms as the current students.
