Sheridan School of Business Marketing and Advertising program students competed recently in The Vanier College BDC Case Challenge held in Montreal.

“The Sheridan School of Business team were among the six finalists, winning the Scotiabank award for a second year. The battle was so fierce that it took judges an hour to determine which teams were tops and Sheridan, despite the most innovative and unique presentation, did not make the top three. The team missed one key element in the case, and the judges went with those teams which picked up on that issue,” said David Nowell, Sheridan team coach.

This year, 22 teams from colleges across Canada battled one another on February 13-14, 2010. The Business Development Bank of Canada (BDC) has been a supporter of this competition since its inception. Major sponsors also include ScotiaBank, and McCarthy Tetrault.

Sheridan School of Business students Crystal Bennett, Jayme Bennett, and Chris Carre competed in the Vanier College event. Vanier’s Case challenges are grueling encounters that demand creativity, knowledge, clear thinking, steady nerves and good presentation skills. During the competition students, in teams of three, are isolated for three hours to analyze a business problem they have never seen before, create a Power Point presentation then present a viable marketing plan before a panel of judges. The teams are judged on the practicality and value of their solutions, and the quality of their presentations.

The Vanier College Business Administration Department is host and organizer of the annual Vanier College Case Challenge, an inter-collegial marketing case competition involving colleges from Quebec , Ontario, New Brunswick, Nova Scotia, and Alberta. This competition offers community college and cegep level Business Administration students a singular opportunity to apply what they learn in the classroom to a true to life business experience.

The Vanier College Case Challenge has been such a resounding success that it has grown from three colleges when it was launched by Vanier College, to a planned 22 colleges in 2010.

Sheridan School of Business Paralegal students raise cash and hope for ravaged survivors in Haiti

Adrea Smith, left, and Megha Ahuja offer baked goods to fellow students to raise funds for Haiti

Sheridan School of Business Paralegal students rallied around Adrea Smith to offer baked goods to raise funds for the victims of the recent earthquake in Haiti.  By the time the last cupcake was consumed, Smith and her fellow students had raised $600 with a matching donation from the Government of Canada for a total of $1200 donated to the survivors in desperate need in Haiti.

Adrea Smith, a second year Sheridan Paralegal program student was deeply concerned about the desperate need of the victims in Haiti and knew that she must make some type of donation to the cause.

“I couldn’t just sit by and do nothing for the Haitian victims so I decided what better way than to sell baked products at school that are affordable for students,” said Smith.

Smith rallied her entire family and her fellow Paralegal students together to create the bake sale.  Her son Stephaun created posters for the event, her aunt Joeta baked, and classmates Camy Duff, Megha Ahuja, Sebrina Smellie, and Michael Quelch assisted Smith in bringing the idea to fruition.  Smith also received donations from her Paralegal program professors, and from many fellow Paralegal students.

Smith asked Richard Leighton, program coordinator,  for a letter which she took to several food stores to aid in her fund-raising. She received a lot of no’s but that did not stop her.  In the end Price Chopper (Mclaughlin/Queen St. location) and Longos (Hurontario & Ray Lawson Boulevard) gave her gift cards which were used to purchase baked products from their stores.  Smith also received cash donations from Natural Cleaning Services and Traffic Ticket Links in Brampton.
