In a project designed for Sheridan School of Business students to discover the marketing of a bank brand from the corporate level down through to the individual teller and branch staff member, groups of 5-6 Banking and Wealth Management students created displays to market the “brand” of each of the national banks. The resources required include the bank’s annual report and website, their advertising in newspapers and internet and the local branch brochures and pamphlets.

Professor Michael Kaine speaks with Brittney Tayles, Heather Bell, Laila Saleh, Sana Qadri, and Rabia Batool about their banking display.

Sheridan School of Business Marketing, E-commerce and Human Resources students recently designed and delivered workshops geared to small businesses with the promotion and support of the Brampton Small Business Enterprise Centre.

Sheridan second and third year School of Business students from the Davis campus, to date, have designed and delivered eight workshops for Small Business and entrepreneurs at the Enterprise Center in downtown Brampton. The workshops are an initiative of the Sheridan School of Business Council, developed with the support of Sheridan Business professors, and are offered in conjunction with the Brampton Small Business Enterprise Centre which is operated by the City of Brampton with Government of Ontario funding.

The workshops have included presentation, interactive and coaching components. Students covered topics from Self Motivation and Leadership to Negotiation and Positive Influence. This year two Human Resources students, Oshin Chhabra and Lisa Bissoondhari were able to develop the negotiating skills part of our people Engagement theme by providing a practical step by step approach and a hands on activity for each small business owner to apply and practice with.

Both Marketing and E-commerce students have worked together to deliver four “Relationship Marketing and E-commerce” workshops to small business men and women. Students covered topics from Sales and Networking to Customer Retention and Web Design. Two of the Marketing students, Armando Toossi and Bhavandeep Aulakh helped small business owners develop strategies for customer retention and for building increased customer loyalty. Similar to the HR workshops, these workshops included presentation, interactive and coaching components.

“These workshops have provided local small businesses with very useful business skills and inspiration from the energetic delivery. The Enterprise Centre appreciates the partnership we have with Sheridan students and faculty over the years,” said Cassandra Baccardax of the Brampton Small Business Enterprise Center.

Keilty was a member of the first class in the Sheridan School of Business and held student number 22. After graduating Sheridan College, he began his career in sales with the Campbell Soup Company. He was then recruited by Pepsi Cola Canada as Sales Manager, for Ontario and Western Canada.

Striking out on his own, Keilty bought into Smiths Falls Bottling Works and Frontenac Beverages which had bottling and distribution franchises for Pepsi-Cola and Seven Up products. He sold the companies in 1989 and retired at age 40. Boredom soon set in and he started a wholesale food distribution company called Findlay Foods. He then sold his shares in this company in 1999.

During this period, in 1995, Keilty bought The Gananoque Inn & Spa and restored it to its former grandeur, expanding rooms, adding fine dining, a pub and a spa. Now rated as one of Ontario’s Finest Inns, The Gananoque Inn & Spa was voted by Canadian Country Inns magazine as Canada’s most improved inn.

As the owner of Keiltyco, John has acquired numerous real estate holdings in Eastern Ontario. John Keilty represents the entrepreneurial spirit that is the hallmark of the Sheridan School of Business.

“Sheridan Business gave me credibility. Sheridan Business enabled me to get my foot in the door of two major corporations. Then it was up to me to perform and to prove I was worth what I was earning. My professors taught me there is a bigger picture and encouraged me to go after the ‘golden ring’. Speaking of the ‘golden ring’, I still wear it with pride today – my gold Sheridan College ring,” said Keilty.
